Al Jazeera English begins broadcasting today

Date November 15, 2006 RJH

But not in North America. American anchor, Dave Marash – a Jew – lauds his new bosses: “Al-Jazeera is one of the most positive and significant cultural events in the Arab world in centuries [providing] the broadest spectrum of argument” that many Arab viewers have seen. Other AJE luminaries: Riz Kahn and Sir David Frost. (WP)

Good for Al Jazeera. Hopefully they can overcome the prejudice that has built up against them by fearmongering US politicians.

The Times was quite impressed. People will get bent out of shape from time to time over what they perceive as political no-no’s by AJ, but for reporting Things That Matter (Iran, Gaza, Zimbabwe, etc.) rather than Things That Don’t Matter (celebrity divorces, missing blonds), I think AJ may get a loyal following.

It’s a shame you can’t watch in America, though.
